USGS/EROS Web Services
Web Services offer an excellent method of connecting to, and using, the USGS data holdings in a wide variety of clients. On this page you will find free web services that anyone can use to build complete applications. Each service is self-contained and independent. If you are new to using web services, "A Web Services Primer" by Venu Vasudevan hosted on xml.com offers an excellent overview.

This site offers an overview of each service available, and includes details on the functionality provided by each service. Information on how to consume web services and use them in your applications is usually available online at programming help sites. Users of interfaces like Visual Studio.NET will be able to simply point to the WSDL reference for a particular service by including a web reference in their development environment.
